OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Work to Automate Tasks Across Workplace Apps

OpenAI on Thursday launched ChatGPT Work, an agent inside ChatGPT that can carry out multi-step tasks across workplace applications and files, extending the company further into enterprise productivity software and workflow automation.

The tool is built for longer tasks that may run for hours. Users can monitor progress, answer follow-up questions and approve important actions as the system works, OpenAI said. It can research and analyze information, work across connected apps and files, and produce finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports and websites.

The launch takes OpenAI beyond chatbot use into software meant to complete office work across systems, a market where Microsoft, Google and Anthropic are competing for enterprise AI budgets and recurring seat revenue.

ChatGPT Work runs on OpenAI's GPT-5.6 model family, which debuted alongside the product. Reuters reported the tool combines capabilities from ChatGPT and OpenAI's coding product Codex, turning broad user goals into completed work.

At a launch presentation, OpenAI also introduced a desktop application for macOS and Windows that can work with local files, desktop apps and the browser.

The rollout begins with paid users. ChatGPT Work is available first on web and mobile to Pro, Enterprise and Edu plans, with Plus and Business access to follow within days, OpenAI said. Enterprise and Edu workspaces get a two-week preview, with the feature off by default until administrators decide whether to keep it enabled. Some reports said the desktop app is available across all plans, including free users, though the workplace agent features on web and mobile are tied to paid tiers.

OpenAI has framed the product as part of existing plan bundles rather than a separate subscription. The company has not published standalone pricing for ChatGPT Work, and it has not disclosed adoption or revenue targets tied to the launch.

ChatGPT Work can use integrations with tools including Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive and SharePoint, as well as email, calendars, customer relationship management systems and project trackers, according to OpenAI and media reports. That lets it operate across software stacks rather than inside a single vendor's suite.

That competitive position is the core point for investors. Microsoft has embedded Copilot across Microsoft 365 and Teams, and Google is adding AI features across Workspace. ChatGPT Work overlaps with those products in document creation, analysis, communication and workflow execution, but also aims to act as a layer across both ecosystems. That could strengthen OpenAI's case for enterprise subscriptions while pressuring incumbent vendors to defend AI attach rates.

The launch adds to OpenAI's enterprise story as the company prepares for a potential public listing. Reuters described OpenAI as IPO-bound in reporting on the release. OpenAI has not disclosed direct financial expectations for ChatGPT Work, but the product gives it a clearer pitch on enterprise automation, retention in paid tiers and use inside daily office workflows.
