Kratos wins $100 million sole-source space surveillance contract

Kratos Defense & Security Solutions (NASDAQ: KTOS) said it has received an approximate $100 million sole-source prime contract to produce a ground-based modular space domain awareness system, adding a sizable award to the defense contractor's backlog.

The company disclosed the award on July 13 from San Diego. Kratos described the program as a production contract, indicating the work has moved beyond an early development stage. It said the system supports U.S. space domain awareness needs but did not identify the customer, contract vehicle or end program.

Kratos said it was limiting public disclosure because of "competitive and other considerations" and had asked the customer's permission to constrain the technical and program detail it could provide. The company also did not disclose the contract term, delivery schedule or how much funding has been obligated to date.

Even with those gaps, the award is material against Kratos' order book. The company reported consolidated backlog of $2.01 billion as of March 29, 2026, with first-quarter bookings of $605.2 million and a book-to-bill ratio of 1.6. On that basis, a $100 million award would represent roughly 5% of the backlog Kratos last reported, though the company has not said how much of the contract has been formally booked or when it will convert to revenue.

Work on the program will be performed at secure production and integration facilities, Kratos said. That detail, with the limited disclosure, points to the classified or restricted environment in which parts of the work will be executed.

The contract fits an established pattern. Kratos has been building a larger presence in advanced defense niches including hypersonics, missile tracking, unmanned systems and space-related ground infrastructure. Earlier disclosures pointed to other large awards in those areas, including a roughly $100 million hypersonic system program and a separate space-related ground management and integration contract with far larger potential value.

Space domain awareness has become a more prominent mission set as the U.S. military works to improve its ability to detect, track and analyze activity in orbit. Ground-based systems support the sensing, processing and command functions tied to that surveillance.

The effect on revenue timing remains unclear. Kratos has already raised its 2026 outlook, guiding for revenue of $1.70 billion to $1.76 billion and adjusted EBITDA of $170 million to $176 million. The company has also been managing the working-capital demands of scaling production, reporting negative operating cash flow in the first quarter as inventory and vendor prepayments increased.

That leaves the latest contract as an important but bounded development. It adds another production program in a strategic market and supports backlog depth. But without customer identification, funding detail or a disclosed schedule, the immediate earnings impact cannot yet be measured.
